My Canon Story
Fredrick Ochieng is a documentary photographer based in Kenya, with a passion for the transformative power of storytelling and visual arts that spans decades. Fredrick's journey into photography began at the age of 9, when he first experimented with a camera he crafted from clay. This early curiosity grew into a lifelong passion, leading him to become a Canon-certified trainer, sharing his expertise with aspiring photographers across Africa. His work gained international recognition when he contributed to the UN Habitat Millennium Development Goals book in 2006, a project that highlighted his commitment to using photography as a tool for social change.
In 2022, Fredrick was honored as Canon North and Central Africa's Trainer of the Year, a testament to his dedication to nurturing talent and advancing the craft of photography across the continent. His workshops and mentorship programs continue to inspire the next generation of filmmakers, creating opportunities for youth to engage in the industry and tell stories that matter.
He also has great interest in Events, Wildlife and Lifestyle genres in photography. He is the founder of SEMA Ochieng Pictures Limited, a production company through which he leads the Stories from Our Cities film master workshop. This initiative focuses on equipping young filmmakers with the skills and tools they need to document stories from their communities, addressing pressing issues such as democratic freedoms, civic space and sustainable development goals.
