Quick tip: How to create a video tutorial quickly

Aim and purpose

To teach new (and existing) employees the most important points about inserting new labels in a compact form. As clearly and logically as possible. As we prefer to watch rather than read, a video tutorial is a good option.

Location

The location is a given in this case. Labels are inserted. I look for a suitable angle, place a few boxes to the side and set a main setting. The whole process is explained once in this static setting.

Lighting

The light is subtly improved with a bright LED panel by slightly illuminating the person and face from the side. The colour temperature needs to be adjusted to match the room.

Lenses

This clip requires different settings. I mainly use the RF 15-35 mm F2.8L IS USM and the RF 50 mm F1.2L USM. But the lightweight RF 35 mm F2.8 IS Macro STM is also used.

Sound

Freedom of movement is essential here, so I opted for a clip-on microphone with a wireless connection, despite the high level of ambient noise. I asked our protagonist to speak loudly, which he did :) . I recorded on two audio tracks with different sensitivities to have a backup in case of clipping.

Resolution, recording format and colour space

I choose UHD for the resolution, so I can digitally zoom in/scale out if necessary for a more exciting edit. The recording format is H265, which allows me to optimise the colours during grading thanks to 10Bit and Clog3's low contrast gamma curve.

Post production

When editing, I start with the main camera and bring the exposition into a coherent arc.I then add close-ups to the wide perspective.

Grading and Canon LUT

As I work with a Canon specific colour space (Cinema Gammut) and the CLog3 gamma curve, I have to convert the colour space in the edit. This requires the appropriate LUTs (Lookup Tables). You can download these from Canon and use them in your editing software. You can also adjust the contrast and saturation in the same step and quickly achieve a convincing result.
